The Aerial Photo Library of the Mapping Co. contains more than half a million aerial photographs of the territory of Hungary made for mapping purposes since 1950. For technical reasons, aerial photographs intended for military mapping were taken from various altitudes, consequently the images vary in scale. The scale of photographs taken at so-called low flights is around 1:30 000, while the result of high flights are aerial photographs in scales around 1:50 000 or 1:60 000. Most images are black-and-white, which is more economical and better suits mapping application. Colour pictures have only been made in the past decade.

According to the users' demands, it is possible to make copies of aerial photos at the original scale of the photographs (contact copies), or enlargements and approximate transformations at various scales on traditional photo paper. The 23×23 cm size aerial photo frames can be enlarged to 6 or 7 times their original size without deterioration, but occasionally even 10-time enlargements are well applicable in analyses.

Apart from enlargements, photo montages as well as undistorted orthophoto maps, equivalent to maps in accuracy, can be made from the aerial photos, both in traditional or digital formats.

Aerial photographs are provided in analog or digital formats. The digital transformation of aerial photographs is carried out by means of a precision scanner with the resolution required by the user. The largest resolution produces 7µ size pixels, which means a real resolution of 3600 dpi. Digital images can be enlarged on the computer display depending on their resolution.

The photographs giving a full coverage of the country, taken at various times, are especially suitable to identify and analyse changes over time. For some areas there are images available taken in 10 or 12 different years.
